Cybercriminals aren’t always targeting large companies, but often individuals. In this very interconnected world, it is very important to be aware of all the potential cybersecurity vulnerabilities that you and your family face on a daily basis. The risk is prevalent, and you should have plans and systems to protect yourself and family.
Remember, you have exactly what cyber-criminals want. This is especially true this time of year as tax information is being moved back and forth in various tech platforms. Sensitive taxpayer data can be used for fraudulent activities including identy theft and fraudulent refunds. Protecting that information is critical.
Here are some practical steps that can significantly reduce your risk.
Use strong passwords AND multi-factor authentication. It is not longer sufficient to just have a strong password. Hackers are very good at getting passwords through various channels. We all know its annoying to have to use multi-factor authentication, but it is extremely important. This simple additional step can make a world of difference.
Keep your systems updated. Outdated software is one of the most common reasons hackers gain access to systems. Your software providers are constantly updating their softward to close security loopholes.
Encrypt and back-up your important data. If you are keeping the bulk of your important documents on your computer or in cloud storage, make sure you have back ups. Things can always go wrong, and you should have access to your most important docuemnts.
Secure your home network. Firewalls, antivirus tools and virtual private networks (VPNs are now basic protections, not extras.
Be cautious with emails and links. Phishing remains one of th emost common entry points. If something feels off, verify the source. Try not to click on any links sent to you in an email unless you are 100% sure of the source.
Limit access to your data. Only those who truly need access should have it.
